Chemical Description

Clomiphene, also known as Clomifene, is a researh chemical that is a nonsteroidal SERM, Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator, which inhibits estrogen receptors located in the hypothalamus.  It stimulates the hypothalamus to release GnRH in the body along with the anterior pituitary to release gonadotropin.   Chemically it is a derivative of triphenylethelene and a mixture of zuclomifene ((Z)-clomifene) and enclomifene ((E)-clomifene) which are geometric isomers which are the reason clomiphene citrate has both estrogenic and antiestrogenic properties.  Clomiphene has been used to treat infirtility in women that don’t ovulate, male hypogonadism instead of testosterone replacement therapy and to treat gynocomastia.

Research

Clomiphene research treated infertile women who don’t ovulate and the outcome was a success, as a result, in 1967 Clomifene was approved for use in the USA. There is no data supporting its benefits on women that are infertile with an unknown reason.   In test subjects the use of Clomiphene resulted in a greater chance of having twins at birth.

Studies have also shown the benefits to treat hypogonadism in males which were in place of testosterone replacement therapy.  Research in test subjects has a 2-2.5 times testosterone level increase in hypogonadal males.

Data shows that it also can help males with gynecomastia, which is a build up on tissue in the nipple of the breast due to an excess of estrogen in the body.  This can occur when males stop testosterone replacement therapy.
